SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A new exhibit showcasing memorabilia and stories of San Diego Holocaust survivors is now open at the La Jolla Riford Library.

The free exhibit — RUTH: Remember Us the Holocaust — features 16 life-size cardboard cutouts of Holocaust survivors, with 14 of them still living in San Diego.

The exhibit opened to the public on Jan. 12, 2025, and will stay at that location through Dec. 14, 2025. It is open seven days a week during regular library hours.

The exhibit can be found in the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Library Annex in the La Jolla-Riford Branch Library, and shares the history of the Holocaust and World War II, showcases memorabilia and artifacts, and features Holocaust survivors that are still alive today.

Sandra Scheller, of nonproft Remember Us The Holocaust and the daughter of Holocaust survivors, was live on KUSI with City of San Diego Councilmember Raul Campillo (District 7), to talk about the current exhibit and future plans to move the exhibit to a more permanent space.

Councilmember Campillo said he has been working behind the scenes with Scheller, the mayor’s office and philanthropists to create a permanent home for the Holocaust exhibit at the San Carlos Library that is being renovated and expanded over the next several years.

A RUTH team member will be at the exhibit on Tuesdays from 12 to 2:30 p.m. to answer questions and give guided tours. You can also schedule tours by contacting exhibit curator Sandra Scheller. There is a monthly speaker series on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the library’s Community Room.

This project is funded by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, in collaboration with the Jewish Federation of San Diego.
